I enjoy reviewing media so heres a list of games i'm going to be reviewing.
UPDATE: Added grading for each game A-F
Game list:
Assassins Creed 2-Got - Grade: B
The plot goes as so, continuing right after the first game ended we find Desmond being broke out of Abstergo by Lucy and he is taken to a new location with a new Animus, they tell him they need to train him as an assassin but they know it could take years and decide to use the Animus to train him quickly and also seek out what his ancestor witnessed, we then take the place of Ezio who is a happy go lucky son of a noble Florentine Banker he gets in street fights alot with a rival family and he is a womaniser, these qualities add some comic releif to the character and dulls the dark and grim edge that assassins creed had, bar him being a cheeky 17 year old rich boy who wastes his money on women and wine you grow to warm to his character and intergrating Ezio' family into the story really gives the player incentive and motivation to follow through with the plot line.
The Environments in the game are fantastic, well designed and now the game comes with a day and night cycle that adds new strategy to the game but they still have that strange shade effect that feels slightly unatural and very noticable in the evenings, on the other hand the architecture is brilliant really bringing forth that traditional italian feel and looking at the external countryside it really feels like a totally different place compared to AC1, the NPC's interaction to the environments and the player are alot more impressive now, when I bumped into a crate carrier and knocked it from his hands he stopped and started shouting at me asking me if i was an inconsiderate spaniard and i should learn respect, pickpockets are now rife throughout the cities and if you want your money back, you have to chace them, you can also not buy items, armour and weapons from merchants and even dye your clothes so you don't haveto stick to the traditional white.
After playing so far into the plot I can clearly say that this game perfectly brings forth some mechanics that were missing in the first title and added some that were a big suprise for me, at first glance my key excitement was for meeting Leonardo da Vinci and actually getting to use his inventions, I admire him for his historical work and meeting him in a historical simulation was a brilliant oppurtunity to really show what the developers interpret him like in his personality, as I had expected being an artist myself seeing him in his messy workshop busy acting scatterbrained while working away I thought the way Ezio interacts with him was fantastic, unnerved by the way he is so disorganised and so enthiusiastic about his work he makes a fantastic contrast to Ezio.
As for the additional mechanics that suprised me, these came in the form of your uncles villa which you can doll out with fantastic paintings and an armoury and it also comes with a small town which you can buy and upgrade to make more money to support your adventures, I thought this was a good way to intergrate a more roleplay feel into the gameplay, before you seemed to paly Altair avatar to Desmond made to only find out information, but now with Ezio you can feel more a part of the world, they have also created a fast travel system in the form of horse and cart just outside the cities so you don't have to hop on a horse and gallop half the way there before the game asks you "would you like to go here?" which though i think cuts out a considerable amount of countryside makes it alot quicker and less tedious.
Another thing that impressed me was the ability to purchase a fair few weapons or take them from enemies during combat this really widens the scope on combat alongside the new and improved wrist blades combat which makes it alot more aggresive and faster to dispatch enemies, honestly there's nothing more hilarious than bonking a guard on the head with a hammer, on the matter of dispatching enemies the stealth aspect has really improved it feels alot more real and I found myself relying on my common sense more than the "have to play it like the game wants me to" feel guards are fairly less perceptive when it comes to sneaking around them but also with that comes their new ability of just walking up to you if they suspect you and just shouting the gaurds over when they realise "oh shit its that trained killer bloke" on top of that you can blend in with crowds just by walking with them and you can distract some guards and civilians by throwing money on the floor, you can also pay mercenaries to guard you and pay courtesans to walk with you and take them to guards who will willingly walk off post and leave an area unattended for a short space of time.
On the topic of guards you now have an infamy level, whenever you do a bad deed or something the local authoraties don't see as "proper" they will put up posters and heralds will begin telling the public of your deeds, guards will be more aware of your presence in this time but this can be remedied by the removal of posters and paying off the heralds to keep it quiet, for larger things such as assassinations you can kill witnesses which will also lower your infamy, when guards give chase they will actually in some cases just give up chasing you if you go scaling huge buildings, but as said before your infamy will remain until you sort it out.
Overall the game is a fresh new approach to the Assassins Creed growing saga and it really doesn't feel like a shitty sequel either it seems to have enough behind it to stand alone and new players could approach the game without thinking they have to paly the first one to understand it, the plot line for Ezio is more fun to play and less directive which allows for a little more freedom within the world, good work Ubisoft, you're useful for something after all.
